Book Review - Countdown

Lynette Eason drops the next installment of her Extreme Measures series on August 1 and the Countdown is on. If you read the first three books in the series, Raina Price has been a figure throughout as a fixture in the lives of Penny, Grace, and Juliana. Countdown gives us Raina’s backstory, as well as a pulse pounding race to protect one boy from the man who won’t let her go. Since being beaten and left for dead, keeping secrets and guarding her identity are survival requirements in her new life. But Vince Covelli’s patience and quiet persistence make Raina want to trust him. When she sees a familiar face on television, she knows she has to do whatever it takes, at whatever cost to herself, to protect the boy from a threat he doesn’t even know. Opening up to Vince and learning to trust him become necessary, but maybe that’s ok.

In Countdown, Eason delivers action and suspense at every turn. Intrigue is woven into romantic suspense to keep the story moving at an enjoyably fast pace. With characters written carefully to evoke love or hate in turn as appropriate, the multifaceted plot deals subversion on several levels to keep the reader guessing until the satisfying conclusion. If you’re looking for a book you can savor chapter by chapter or one you’ll devour in one sitting, Countdown has your number.

Countdown, book 4 of the Extreme Measures series from Lynette Eason, hits the scene August 1. You can preorder (Baker Book House tends to have great preorder rates) or pick it up then from your favorite local bookseller or online:

Book Review - Critical Threat

Never underestimate the power of a bored serial killer, even if he is living out the rest of his days in prison. Especially when he can afford to pull strings for a puppet. Particularly when he has managed to weasel his way into a transfer to the facility where his son is trying to carry on a life out of the tainted shadow cast upon him.

Supervisory Special Agent Grace Billingsley is tasked with building a profile on a serial killer who has mannerisms similar to The Cell Phone Killer. This cannot be the work of Peter Romanos, who is already in prison. But someone is certainly paying homage to him, and Grace has to figure out who is doing this before he takes another victim. Especially when Grace unwittingly catches his interest and set off an obsession that may end up being his undoing.

Sam Monroe has spent years trying to rebuild his life and reconstruct his image after finding out his father was a serial killer and providing the evidence that led to conviction. Now working as a prison psychologist, Sam must work every day with the knowledge that his father is in the same facility and trying consistently to get Sam to answer his phone calls. As the top expert on Peter Romanos, Grace has asked Sam for input while building her current profile.

With a title like Critical Threat and in a series called Extreme Measures, it is no surprise that this  book delivers hits and hooks at every turn. Lynette Eason is at the top of her game with this series and Critical Threat is another shining star.

Book Review - Crossfire

Though her job has high stakes, FBI Special Agent Juliana Jameson knows how to talk down a hostage taker and has never lost a hostage. Only one incident gets under her skin, one that happened before her career began, but was very personal. As the fifteenth anniversary of this incident approaches, lines between work and home begin to blur when someone begins playing cat and mouse games with Jules. As the situation escalates, it becomes clear that someone is out for blood, and not just a little.

School Resource Officer Clay Fox wastes no time getting to the scene when his sister texts that she has been taken hostage. With Reese stuck in a courtroom, at the mercy of a hostage taker with nothing left to lose, Clay turns his phone over to the beautiful negotiator. After the crisis passes, he finds that there is another one brewing. Juliana makes him want things he doesn’t believe he’s worthy of; how will she ever forgive what he has done when he cannot.

Lynette Eason brings the Extreme Measures crew back together in this second installment as Penny, Grace, and Raina to the support of their good friend, Juliana. With her trademark excitement and multiple storylines, Eason weaves together an unforgettable story and leaves us chomping at the bit for our next look at the crew she has knit together for this series.

Book Review - Life Flight

“Today was not going to be the day they died…” Y’all know I love a strong opening line. This one leaves no doubt that Lynette Eason is going to take us on a thrill ride, so you better be situated securely and recall your crash safety protocol.

The rain and ice should have grounded the flight EMS helicopter pilot Penny Carlton had to sit down hard on the mountain, but that also should have been the hard part of getting their patient to the hospital. A cold hike to a nearby house should have been the second most difficult part of her shift. And an escaped serial killer on the mountain should not have been a factor in this rescue. Unfortunately, serial killers on the run don’t care about “should” and “should not,” and a run in with this one puts Penny on his list.

Penny’s youth is behind her, but the nightmares are not. Instead, they are exacerbated by her mountaintop life or death experience with an escaped serial killer who will not die. Especially when she starts to hear bumps in the night. She sees his face in the crowd as she responds to work calls. Shadows dance along the line between paranoia and reality. Penny is not the only one taking these oddities seriously, as she is surrounded by a fiercely loyal group of friends, one of whom is FBI Special Agent Holt Satterfied.

Holt and Penny have been flirting with more-than-friendship, but hectic schedules and mutual hesitation to share their deepest held tidbits of information hold them back from more. Now Holt’s work and personal lives collide as he chases an escapee who has set his sights on Penny. Will the chase prove fatal for their relationship hopes as their hidden things are revealed or will it prove to both of them that two are better than one? Life Flight kicks off Eason’s new Extreme Measures series with painstaking precision, including scenes that chill to the bone.
